Your Passport Is Now on Your iPhone
But Here’s What It Actually Does
Apple just rolled out the ability to store your passport in Apple Wallet, and before my “green bubble” friends jump in with “Android had this ages ago,” yes, we know. Congratulations on your early adopter merit badge. The rest of us are just happy we don’t have to keep digging through our bags like raccoons digging through the trash (and I love raccoons!).
But let’s be clear:
You cannot use this digital passport for international travel.
Not yet, anyway.
So what’s the point? Why should you even care?
What the Digital Passport Is Good For
While it won’t get you across a border, it will streamline a ton of identity checks that used to require your physical passport:
• TSA PreCheck and domestic airport security
Soon, you’ll be able to use your iPhone the same way some states already allow digital driver’s licenses (Texas, could you please get on this?), verifying your identity without handing your passport to someone.
• Hotels that require passport verification
Some U.S. and international hotels ask for a passport at check-in, even for domestic travelers. A secure digital version can simplify that process without you pulling out the booklet.
• Identity verification for government services
Expect agencies (slowly… very slowly) to begin accepting digital passports for online identity checks, the same way many are moving toward digital IDs.
• Faster identity verification for travel apps
Airlines, global entry kiosks, and travel platforms will roll this in long before border checkpoints do.
• Emergency backup if you lose the physical passport
No, it won’t replace it. But if you’re stranded, having encrypted digital proof of your identity can help speed up the replacement process.
Takes Less than 5 Minutes
It didn’t take long to add it. Go into the wallet, add a digital ID, take a picture of the photo part of your passport, and then take a live photo. Move your head, smile, close your eyes, and hold your phone up to the passport chip. It will then perform a quick verification process.
The Bottom Line
Apple isn’t replacing the physical passport. This is about convenience, privacy, and reducing the “dig through your backpack because you definitely put it somewhere” panic.
It’s a small step, but an important one, and it’s one more way our devices are quietly removing friction from daily life. Despite loving my wallet, I’m thrilled if everything is on my phone.
And honestly? I’m here for anything that lets me carry less stuff when I’m already trying to avoid injuring myself with an overpacked bag again. That’s a true story.
Picture it: A few weeks ago. DFW Terminal D. I go to get my 61-pound bag off the carousel, fall, travel a bit on the carousel, and manage to get back on my feet. Wounded pride, bloodied hand. I’m an overpacker.
Are you going to add your passport to your iPhone? Or maybe you already have this with your Android phone. Do you use it?
