Now… Take a Breath
Today marks the end of the busiest season for many of us in the tax and accounting industry. Whether you’ve been grinding away at returns, wrangling client documents, or simply staying afloat, take a second to appreciate what you’ve accomplished.
Now’s the perfect time to look back, take notes, and start shaping next season into something better.
What Went Right? What Needs to Change?
After-tax-season reflection doesn’t have to be dramatic — just real. Here are a few questions I like to ask myself:
What worked well this season?
What stressed me out the most?
Were some clients no longer a good fit?
Where did tech help me — and where did it fail me?
What did I promise myself I’d fix after April 15th?
Write it down now — before the chaos fades and you forget what mattered most.
💡 Tech to Revisit (or Finally Implement)
Whether you’re running a solo firm or managing a full team, a small tweak can mean major time saved next season.
⚠️ And contrary to popular opinion — automation doesn’t fix everything.
Here are some tech-related areas worth a second look:
Client onboarding: Could it be more streamlined? Less confusing for would-be clients?
E-signature & 8879 workflow: Were you chasing signatures at the last minute? Did clients sign without reviewing and come back with changes an hour later?
Task management: Did anything fall through the cracks?
Template cleanup: Emails, engagement letters, organizers, reminders — are they due for a refresh?
Communication tools: Did you have a reliable way to track client conversations? Whether it’s your practice management system’s notes section or a shared Google Doc, what worked — and what didn’t?
Take a few minutes this week to list three tweaks that would’ve made this season better. Then block off time in May or June to start exploring options.
💬 I firmly believe if it’s not on my calendar, it doesn’t exist.
✅ One Small Step This Week
Don’t try to fix everything at once. Just keep your momentum going.
Here are a few ideas you could tackle this week:
Revisit your engagement letter. I tweak mine every year.
Schedule more efficiently. Calendly is my go-to for easy scheduling. I wrote a review here.
Demo a new tool you’ve been curious about.
Try a new client portal if your current one isn’t cutting it.
Tech alone won’t fix a broken process. Start by outlining your ideal workflow — then choose tools that support it. The slower season is a gift. Use it wisely.
💬 Let’s Keep the Conversation Going
What changes are you looking to make?
What tech tweaks are on your to-do list?
What do you struggle with most and need help with?
Those Caffeine cards were stolen. The ballots were stuffed. I call BS and lots of other temper tantrum like things.
Oh my gosh! What a fun surprise alongside some great tips. Thank you!
